I visited the Ørestad Gymnasium in Copenhagen, known for its modern architecture and focus on media education. The journey was possible thanks to Erasmus+ and HLW Weiz. I’m convinced that through exchanges with our European colleagues, we can learn a lot from each other and further develop our teaching practices.
As a teacher and media workshop organisator interested in innovative teaching concepts, I found this school with its special profile in media and communication to be a fascinating destination. Through the Erasmus+ program, I had the opportunity to spend a week observing classes at Ørestad Gymnasium and exchanging ideas with the teachers there. I was thrilled to take advantage of this chance. The teachers at Ørestad Gymnasium place a strong emphasis on developing media literacy. Students are skillfully introduced to media use and learn to utilize it meaningfully and safely. During my stay, I engaged in intensive discussions with the local teachers and gained many interesting insights.
Two other teachers from Collegi Esclaves SCJ Alcoi in Spain were also visiting at the same time. Together, we experienced the open and transparent teaching culture of the gymnasium. The Danish gymnasium system is a three-year educational program that begins after 9th or 10th grade and leads to university entrance qualification. Great importance is placed on individual support for students, with Ørestad Gymnasium focusing on imparting media competence.
I also had the luck that the Copenhagen Light Festival took place during my stay. The whole city was filled with different light installations. I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to implementing what I’ve learned at my own school and in my workshop.
